In the spring and summer, insects are all over the place! However, when fall arrives we see less and less insects until one day — there’s not an insect in sight! Birds fly south for the winter — do insects do the same? Here’s your long-awaited answer:

Insects Do Hibernate

Adult insects of many species will hibernate during the long, cold winters. Since extremely cold temperatures can kill many insects, they will look for warmer areas to live for the next couple of months. Some common hiding spots include:

  • Tree Holes
  • Leaf Piles
  • Deep Beneath the Soil
  • Underneath Rocks and Logs
  • Roof Eaves
  • Exterior Siding
  • Homes/Attics (via cracks and holes in foundation, siding, roofs, etc.)

How Do Insects Survive the Winter?

  • There’s no guarantee that all insects will survive the winter. The more harsh and drastic the temperature changes are, the less likely survival will be.
  • Insects that are beneath the soil will actually benefit from layers of snow, as it will keep the soil blanketed with a constant temperature (rather than extreme variances).
  • Some insects, like the Monarch butterfly, will migrate during the fall to a warmer location — just like birds!
  • Believe it or not — some species of insects will actually replace the water within their body with glycerol. Glycerol is a type of antifreeze that prevents these insects from freezing in their tracks!
