This is a common cast of characters that we see all over the country, but especially here in the Northeast. The woods and the dampness of Fall is perfect for these rodents and their mating cycles and we need to keep them in the woods. Let’s learn a little more about the enemy:

Mice

  • House Mice- These mice tend to be about 3 inches in length and they are gray brown or yellowish brown. They are prominent in the Northeast and their tails tend to be about the same length as their bodies.
  • Eastern Harvest Mice- These mice tend to be about 2 inches in length and their tail is almost double that length. They are darkers and more grizzled than house mice.
  • Deer Mice- These mice are VERY common in our area and they tend to be about 3 inches in length. Their tail tends to be a little shorter than the rest of their body and they thrive in wooded areas.

Rats

  • This species of rodent is larger than a mouse and tends to be about 5-6 inches in length.
  • There is however a very large species of rat called the Bosavi Wooly Rat which is an oustanding 32 inches in length!
  • The Norway Rat is the most common species of rat and they thrive in the wooded areas of Middlesex County. They are found on every continent except for Antarctica.

Squirrels

  • Squirrels are a developed rodent with a communication system that makes them difficult to get ahead of.
  • Gray Squirrels are very common in the Northeast, in fact, we are willing to bet that you have already seen one today.
  • Squirrels tend to nest in attics and warm places because they can access your roof via branches. Keep them trimmed to cut off their access.
