Winter is not coming… winter is here! While annoying pests like mosquitoes, mountains of ants, and wasps are no longer bothering us for the next few months, there are different groups of pests that are. If you’re trying to get through the winter without seeing a single pest inside of your home, take a look at this guide of prevention tips.
1. Seal the Envelope
Chances are, your home has a few gaps, cracks, and holes that expose your home to the outside world. These openings act as entryways for pests like mice, cockroaches, and spiders. Take the time to inspect the exterior of your home and patch up any of these openings with the appropriate caulking material. For larger holes, make sure to add metal mesh to clog the hole and then cement it into place with the caulking. Not only will you drastically cut down on your chances of becoming infested, you’ll also help cut down on your monthly heating bills!
2. Take a Gander at the Roof
The winter is filled with storms that have harsh winds and more snow/ice than anyone cares to see. These winter weather conditions can cause some damage to the shingles on your roof — exposing the wood underneath. The exposed roof can begin to rot and give way to any pests trying to force their way into your home. After each major storm (after the snow is cleared and the ice melts), perform a visual inspection of your roof and have any faulty shingles replaced.
3. Practice Everyday Prevention Habits
- The best way to prevent a pest infestation during winter (or any time of the year), is to always practice these habits:
- Never allow tree branches or vegetation to come too close to your home.
Inspect the entire roofing system multiple times per year for any weak or faulty areas. - Add weatherstripping to loose window and door frames.
- Do not store items in cardboard boxes within attics and basements; use sealable plastic bins. Keep all clutter off of the floor and place items on shelves.
- Keep firewood on a raised platform at least 20 feet away from your home.
- Store all boxed and bagged food in sealable plastic or glass containers.
