Have you ever heard the saying one man’s trash is another man’s treasure? The same applies to pests and what they define as ‘treasure’ varies from human beings. A leftover chicken wing is gold to raccoons, mice, flies and rats and it is up to you cut off their next meal. Here is how you do:
Secure Your Garbage
Your trash can might be old and the lid likely is either lost or deformed by now. This is music to a raccoon’s ears. What you need to do is take the lid (or buy a new one), secure it the best you can and proceed with the following steps:
- If your lid has a handle on top you are all set.
- If the handles are on the sides, you’ll need to poke a hole in the top part of the lid. Scissors or a knife should work.
- Run a bungee cord through the hole and make sure it is taught when you secure it to the sides of the can.
Hide Your Garbage
If you have a garage, it might be best to keep your cans in there. It will keep pests out of your garbage, it will make the side of your home more visually appealing and you won’t have to worry about annoying cleanup. But yes, if your garage isn’t pest-proof, this will attract them to that area.
Protect Your Garbage
You could use some common pest-deterrents to keep them out of your garbage. Here are a few of our favorites:
- Rosemary Leaves
- Peppermint Oils
- Motion Sensor Light
