Are you going to be traveling in the near future? Are you waiting at the airport as we speak? Or maybe you’re in a cab on the way to a hotel? No matter where you are right now, there’s one thing you need to worry about on your upcoming trip — bed bugs! Don’t worry, we can teach you how to tell if your hotel room has bed bugs in the first 5 minutes!
It doesn’t matter if you’re staying in a five-star hotel either. Bed bugs can infest even the nicest of places!
The First 2 Minutes: The Bed
Obviously, you’re going to start looking for bed bugs in the bed! Use a flashlight (the one on your phone works fine) and inspect the comforter and sheets on the bed. Look for any small black, red, or brown spots.
Don’t stop there!
Inspect the mattress itself and the frame. Bed bugs tend to hide in the joints, nooks, and crannies of things. So be sure to pick up and inspect underneath the mattress. You’ll want to look at all of the seams, zippers, crevices, and any other spaces where something could hide.
Minute 3: Furniture and Pillows
Once you’ve cleared the bed, move onto any couches, recliners, and throw pillows in the room. Chances are you’re not going to be sitting on the additional furniture in the room, but in case you do (or if you place any luggage here) it’s worth it to inspect these things.
Like the bed, look under the cushions, in any crevices, and along seams and zippers. There’s actually a higher probability of bed bugs existing here than in the bed itself. Think about it — how often does the cleaning crew actually inspect the furniture?
Minute 4: Closets and Walls
If clothes are put away during a guest’s stay, they’re more than likely going to be hung up in the closet. Since bed bugs are known to infest clothing, you should take the time to inspect the closet (even though it might be empty).
You should also inspect areas where the floor meets the wall. Bed bugs love to hang out in corners, as well as electrical outlets.
Minute 5: Night Stands and Luggage Racks
Open the drawers, check the corners, and even inspect the lamp (and its shade) sitting atop of it. If there’s furniture in the room, it should be inspected!
Lastly, you’re going to want to inspect the luggage rack. This is where you want to place your luggage — not the bed, couch, or floor where bed bugs could be hiding within the carpeting. Right before you place your bags on the rack, look it over. Especially the material holding the frame together.
