If you have a getaway planned to end off Summer 2017, you are going to want to listen up! Bed Bugs can not only ruin a vacation, they can come home with you and ruin your comfortability in your home. They are a nuisance and they need to be dealt with properly! Here are some precautions you can take when you are away from home:
Take Care of Your Baggage
When you get into your hotel room, the first reaction might be to throw your bags down and get unpacked so you can begin the fun. This is a major pest control MISTAKE! Here is what you should do:
- Place your bags on top of a table or dresser.
- NEVER place them on the bed.
- Inspect the carpet thoroughly and see if you see any signs of bed bug/ pest damage.
Grab a Flashlight and Credit Card
The flashlight is obviously there to help you peek in between cracks and your credit card is going to help you get into tough crevasses. Here are some tips:
- Bed bugs like to hide by the corner of your bed. This is a good place to start inspection.
- You’re looking for a bug about 4mm in length with a brown shade.
- They could also leave behind dark blood spots from bites.
Peel Back the Laundry
- After you remove your sheets and deem the mattress safe, you’ll need to check the linens.
- Either lay them out over the dresser or have a traveling companion inspect while you hold.
- Too many people just assume their hotel linens are clean.
Finish With Upholstery
Now you should be checking the chairs, carpets and drapes. Bed bugs will cling to anything with cloth and you can never make assumptions. Report any issues you find to hotel staff and be sure to take pictures for evidence when you ask for a refund.
