We have spoken to you about pests in the home, pests in the backyard, pests in restaurants and now pests in the classroom. The school year just begun and we are here to warn you that pests might already be in your classroom! Here is what you need to know:
Pests of Concern
- Ants
- Bees and Wasps
- Cockroaches
- Lice
- Millipedes
- Rodents
- Termites
- Ticks
Where Are Pests Most Common
- Cafeteria- The food storage in these areas is critical to pest control. Management of cutting and preparation areas is of the utmost concern.
- Classrooms- Clutter is a pest’s best friend and we all know how the classroom can get messy. Make sure you urge your students to clean their desks once a month at least!
- Lockers- Kids leave their lunches in their locker all the time and this is a field day for pests.
- Landscaping- Neglected landscaping can bring in pests from all over the place. Near the school is the best place to start and if you are paying taxes, the landscaping should be clean!
Basic Tips for Teachers
- Limit the areas where your students can eat their food. You don’t want to be a dictator, but you also want to avoid pests.
- Make janitorial staff aware of any cracks or loose seals near windows so that pests can not get into your classroom.
- Educating students about the dangers of pests is important if you want them to buy into the pest control efforts.
