When winter rolls around, many pests will go into hiding, leave the area, or find shelter inside of your home. But are there any pests that actually like the snow. As a matter of fact, there are a few you might see throughout the wintertime outside of your house.

Winter Stoneflies

Adult winter stoneflies can be seen standing atop snow, however, they do have wings. Since this insect is cold-blooded (and insects need some heat to allow their wings to function), they aren’t always able to fly around during the wintertime. Even though flight might not be an option, it’s nothing to worry about! There aren’t many predators they have to worry about when it’s cold enough for snow to fall.

Snow Flies

Even though this is a species of fly, the snow fly does not have any wings. Instead, snow flies will run around atop the snow and will look to suck the snow in order to consume water. It is believed that these insects do not need to feed and can survive off of the water that they suck from the snow.

Snow Fleas

While they might look like fleas and are called fleas — snow fleas aren’t fleas at all! Snow fleas are actually hexapods. They will usually make appearances when the sun is out and will look like specks of dirt (or pepper) on top of the snow. These hexapods aren’t studied too much, so it’s not known if they do feed. However, it is suspected that they eat any algae that grows on the surface of the snow.

Even if you don’t see insects during the winter when it snows, there are some that are out there — you just have to look very carefully!
