DIY bug traps are a fun and inexpensive way to get rid of those pests once and for all. Whether you need to get rid of mosquitoes from around your patio or get those fruit flies out of your kitchen, read on and find the right bug trap for your needs.
Two-Liter Trap
This is an easy and versatile homemade bug trap that can be used indoors or outdoors and catch a variety of pests.
What You Need
- 1 two-liter bottle
- Tape
- Scissors or a razor
Take your two-liter bottle and cut the top of it off right below where it starts to curve and narrow. Place your bait in the bottom (varies with insect) and then fit the top half of the bottle upside down inside the bottom half so it looks like a funnel. Secure in place with tape.
You can hang it up outside, set on a patio table, or set up inside your house to catch wasps, bees, and mosquitos. Place it in your house to catch stink bugs and cockroaches.
The bait you use will vary from insect to insect. Below is a list of insects and proper bait.
Stink Bugs, Moths: A small battery powered light
Wasps, Hornets, Bees, Cockroaches: Sugar water, soda, juice
Mosquitoes: Mix 1 cup of hot water with 1 cup of sugar then add 1 teaspoon of yeast
Fruit Fly Trap
Where do these things come from? Even in the middle of the winter, these tiny pests will find their way into your house. Use this trap to get rid of them for good.
What You Need
- Small bowl or glass jar
- Toothpick
- Plastic wrap
- Rubber band
- Bait (fruit, wine, beer)
For this homemade bug trap first, place the bait in the bottom of the container. Add some water until the fruit is half submerged. Put the plastic wrap over the top and secure with the rubber band. Poke holes with a toothpick so the fruit flies have a place to enter. When the flies enter to eat the bait they won’t be able to escape.
Spider Repellant
No matter how hard you try to seal up those cracks and windows it seems there are always spiders living somewhere in your house. Let’s be fair, most spiders do not harm humans and actually get rid of other pests in your house. But if you really don’t want to share your home with them here is a way to send them back outside.
What You Need
- Spray bottle
- Liquid dish soap
- Essential oils (lavender, lemon, tea tree, citronella)
Spiders are not fans of strong scents and tastes. If you fill a spray bottle with dish soap and a strong scent like lemon or lavender (make sure you and your family enjoy the smell first) you can use the concoction as a spider repellant. Just spray spider webs and dark places with the homemade repellant. Spray well and often to make your house uninviting to spiders.
