Too many folks make the mistake of labeling ticks as a warm weather pest. While they are more active in the Summer, they are still alive and hungry as the weather starts to turn. While you tend to be more covered up in the Autumn months, your pets are not, and they are vulnerable in the heavily wooded areas of Hillsborough and Middlesex County.
Ticks That Heat Up During Fall
That blacklegged deer tick is one of the most active Fall species and it is native to our area here in Connecticut and New Hampshire. They tend to look for more meals this time of year because they are trying to stock up for a long Winter. These ticks can carry:
- Lyme Disease
- Ehrlichia
- Anaplasmosis
- Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
Where Are They Located
Ticks are very efficient hunters and they don’t expend much energy to find hosts. They wait in the weeds and let their meals come to them so they can really be anywhere with grass and natural hiding places. In the Fall however, ticks like to hide in fallen leaves and brush from trees, so be careful on your hikes!
How Can I Protect My Dog?
- Ticks have gotten fat from a Summer of feasting, so Fall ticks are easier to find on your dog.
- Inspect them thoroughly after every walk in the woods!
- Use tick prevention collars. They are not 100% effective, but they are better than nothing.
- Don’t let your dog go wandering off path and into brush or wooded areas.
