You’re already mad that you have to go to work on this beautiful Summer day and now you are greeted with garbage all over your driveway. It was those annoying raccoons again! They seem to be multiplying and it is because they have a reliable food source in the food that you are throwing away. Get ahead of them and protect your sanity with these three easy tips:
Fortify Your Trash Can
- Bungee Cords are a great way to lock down your trash lid and deter all kinds of pests.
- Take your lid and secure it tightly onto your can. If there is no open handle, make a hole with a knife so you have something to string the cord through.
- Take your bungee cord and string it through or under your handle and wrap it however many times are necessary for it to be completely taught.
- Lock down the hooks to your can handles!
Light Them Up
Raccoons are a nocturnal species that do almost all of their hunting and mating during the nighttime hours. If you really want to scare a raccoon, you need to take them out of their comfort zone and lighten up the night. Something as simple as a motion detecting light by your trash cans would do the trick and these can be bought for a relatively low cost. The only thing you have to double check is that the light shines low enough to pick up the creatures that are much shorter than humans.
Spray Them Away
Raccoons and Opossums are attracted to scents that we find disturbing and unpleasant– like garbage! Knowing what attracts them will help you learn how to deter them because you need to dilute that favorable aroma. Here are some scents that might help you fend them off:
- Ammonia
- Cayenne Pepper
- Peppermint
- Naptha Flakes
