With College Football in full swing, we have seen more and more pests popping on the sidelines. But they’re not the same kind that are popping up in your living room. These pests are bigger, more energetic and just louder than your average joe. They are the life sized pest mascots of the NCAA. Let’s meet them:
University of Richmond Spiders
These spiders have been around since 1894 and it actually started as a nickname for a lanky pitcher on the baseball team named Puss Ellyson. They have won two NCAA March Madness games in the past decade which is an amazing accomplishment for a school this size.
University of Arkansas Boll Weevils
The Boll Weevil is known for their invasiveness and they terrorize gardens and crops in the Southern United States. The school claims they chose the name because this pest was very tough and displayed a lot of fight.
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
This is without a doubt the best and most prestigious team on the list. Their football program is one of the top 20 winningest programs in DI history. NFL Star wide receivers Calvin Johnson and Demaryius Thomas both wore the Yellow Jacket uniform.
University of South Carolina Sumter Fire Ants
This is a smaller school that only sponsors four collegiate teams but their mascot is one of the nastiest pests on the list. Fire ants are much more common in the south and they often attack in packs. A human being rarely receives one or two stings from these pests.
UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs
The Banana Slug is native to the Pacific Coast of the United States which is why the University of Santa Cruz (California) adopted the name. The banana nickname is due to their color, but other than that these guys pretty much just act like traditionally slugs. Pretty funny for a mascot name though!
Other than the spiders and yellow jackets, none of these mascots are indigenous to the Massachusetts area. Most of them reside in the southern United States and we will let those pest control companies handle that. Let’s get you set up for your Fall inspection so you can get back to watching college football.
