Materials You Need

  • 2 Liter Plastic Bottle
  • 4 Spoons of White Sugar
  • 10g of Yeast
  • 200 ML of Water
  • Pot
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • String
  • Bailey’s Container
  • Drill

Step 1: Bottle Prep

  • You are going to need to cut your bottle.
  • Measure about an inch above where your bottle becomes thinner and cut with the scissors.
  • You now have a small top half and larger bottom half.

Step 2: Mixture

  • Put 200 ML into a pot and boil.
  • Add 4 teaspoons of sugar once the water is boiling. Now wait for water to be room temperature.
  • Pour the sugar water into the bottom half of the bottle, then add yeast!
  • Don’t mix the yeast. Pour it in and let it mix naturally.
  • Put the top half of your bottle face down into the bottom half to create a funnel.
  • Close the border or area where the two halves meet with tape.

Step 3: Prepare to Hang

  • Drop your bottle trap into a dark Bailey’s container so it can’t be impacted by the sun.
  • Use your drill to open up two holes that are directly across from each other on the top of the container.
  • Tie string through the holes leaving enough slack to hang the trap.
  • You can leave this container hanging every time you have to switch out the bottle!

Step 4: Start Hunting

  • The best place to hang the trap is an area unexposed to direct sunlight. Dark and humid is better.
  • The yeast releases CO2 and combining that with sugar makes this mixture a hot bed for mosquitoes.
  • The mosquitoes fly into the hole and get stuck in the water and 99% of them will have a VERY hard time flying back out.
  • You should change the water and yeast every two weeks.
